Death toll continues to rise as 13 more die of measles
Emergency measures have been adopted by the provincial health authorities.
KANDHKOT: A deadly measles outbreak in interior Sindh has left at least 246 children dead in a month as seven more die of measles on Wednesday, Dunya News reported.
According to reports gathered from different parts of Sindh, three children died in Kandhkot in last 24 hours, taking the toll in the area to 108. Another child died today in Lakhi Ghulam Shah area of Shikarpur.
So far, eight children in Larkana and two from Nawabshah have lost their lives.
In Sukkur District, the toll has reached 63 after deaths of five more children in Saleh Put area.
Twelve children in Ghotki, four in Thal and 35 children died of measles in Khairpur in past few weeks.
Other affected areas include Gaddu, Kashmore, Tangwani and eighty other rural areas.
According to District Health Officer, 2,77000 registered children will be vaccinated against measles. Moreover, vaccination campaign has failed to launch completely in Ghotki area
Sindh province, the area hardest hit by the measles outbreak, has also been battered by repeated floods in recent years that have damaged hospitals and clinics.
Measles is an extremely infectious disease spread by coughing and sneezing or personal contact. It causes a fever, cough and a rash all over the body. Most people who contract the disease recover, but it can be fatal for malnourished children.
Complications from the disease can include blindness, an infection that causes brain swelling, dehydration and diarrhea, and pneumonia.
