Prime Minster Yousaf Raza Gilani has convened a meeting of all four Chief Ministers on Wednesday in Islamabad to discuss the sugar crisis, inflation and other issues. The sugar crisis in Punjab still continues while the provincial government is yet to get the Lahore High Court (LHC) orders implemented. In crackdown against the sugar mills, the government has seized hundreds of thousands of sugar bags. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet to ensure the sugar supply at Rs 40 per kg in markets. On the other hand, Provincial Minister for Food Malik Nadeem Kamran said that the government was telling to the sugar mill owners it couldnt ignore the courts orders. He was talking to reporters in Lahore. The conflicts cropped up between Punjab government and sugar mill owners after the LHC ordered to sell sugar at Rs 40 per Kg. The Punjab government deployed police at several sugar mills whereas mill owners refused to negotiate with the government. The sugar mill owners said that the Punjab government previously fixed a price of Rs 45/Kg without consulting them and when they were ready to sell it at that price, the LHC set the price at Rs 40/Kg without hearing their point of view. The mill owners also vowed to go to the court instead of talking to the Punjab Government.
