Traditional Chinese orchestra debuts in New York

New Yorkers are in for a cultural treat, as the China Anhui Traditional Orchestra (CATO) makes it New York debut on Monday at Lincoln Center.

The orchestra, founded in 1956 has established itself as a leader in Chinas traditional music arena. Consisting of 66 musicians playing traditional instruments of bowed strings, woodwinds, plucked strings and percussion, CATO will perform musical pieces that are in typical Anhui folk style.The orchestra wishes not only to champion traditional Chinese music, but also to blend in with other musical cultures in order to communicate according to its Dean, Yu Hong Jie.The orchestra is currently touring throughout the United States, and has performed in Baltimore and Washington DC prior to its New York debut.
