Ralph Lauren exhibits dresses at NY Fashion Week

American designer Ralph Lauren, the king of prep, looked ready to stamp his RL logo all over the jet set in China with an opulent Fall 2011 collection full of Far Eastern style references on the last day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

Without a Polo shirt or tweed blazer in sight, the Fall 2011 Ralph Lauren runway painted a seductive picture in mostly black clothes in sumptuous fabrics such as silk and velvet. A black one-shouldered, one-sleeved gown with an embroidered dragon motif offered a modern take on evening. A long black cheongsam, the traditional Chinese dress, turned flirtatious with an exposed back covered in black lace.Art Deco-inspired accessories such as cloche hats and lacquered jewelry set an elegant tone. Pops of red -- the color of joy in China -- and emerald green showed up in earrings, necklaces and belts. Gowns in deeper red and green shades of velvet and silk made the fashion story more in touch with the Fall 2011 seasons penchant for jewel tones.The models marched down the runway under the soundtrack China Girl and in a departure from the usual runway model casting of just one or two Asian models, Ralph Lauren won notice from the fashion press for using more than a handful.
