Sharmeen Obaid's 'A Girl in the River' wins best International Television award
Chinoy is the first Pakistani who will be honored with the accolade.
KARACHI (Daily Dunya) - Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy ‘s documentary on honour killing, "A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness" has won the Best International Television award.
Chinoy is the first Pakistani who will be honored with the accolade which was announced during the 49th annual Robert F. Kennedy Journalism awards held on May 6. The formal ceremony will be conducted in Washington DC on May 23.
In 2012, Chinoy became the first Pakistani woman to receive Oscar for her documentary ‘Saving Face’. She went on to win her second Oscar and Columbia University award in 2016 for "A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness". She also ranks among the 11 women who was awarded for producing non-fiction film.
In an exclusive interview with Dunya representative Sharmeen said that she is working on various issues which have occurred in the society but we choose to ignore them. She revealed that the topic of "A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness" was not only difficult but political too due to which she has to ponder much on it.
Sharmeen asserted that her success lies hugely on team work as her team was never afraid to work on highly-sensitive issues. She considered the journalism award as a privilege and vowed that she and her team will strive to film such issues in a better way.
A Girl in the River, which is a joint production of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (SOC) Films and Home Box Office (HBO), follows the life of an 18-year-old girl who is a survivor of an honour killing attempt.
