Former Australia captain Ian Craig dead at 79

Ian Craig, Australia's youngest test cricket player and its youngest captain, has died aged 79.

SYDNEY (AP) - Ian Craig, who was Australia s youngest test cricket player at 17 and its youngest captain at 22, has died aged 79, Cricket Australia said.
 

A right-hand batsman, Craig became the youngest player to play a test for Australia when he made his debut against South Africa in 1953 aged 17 years, 239 days. He was made captain for the 1957-58 tour to South Africa aged 22 years, 194 days and after playing only six tests.
 

Craig played 11 tests in total before retiring at 26, having made 358 runs at an average of 19.88 with a highest score of 53.
 

He was seen as a player of massive promise when he made his first class debut for New South Wales aged 16, becoming the youngest Australian to score a first class double century when he made 213 against South Africa the following year.
