ASTANA (Dunya News) - Fourteen military personnel were killed and three others rescued after an accident during a naval training exercise in bad weather on Kazakhstan’s Caspian Sea coast.
According to foreign media, the accident occurred on Thursday while naval personnel were conducting a training exercise despite adverse weather conditions. Following the incident, Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry arrested five Defence Ministry officers.
Officials said the arrested officers included the navy’s first deputy commander. All five were detained on suspicion of negligence and violating navigation regulations.
Authorities said further investigations were underway to determine the cause of the accident and examine other aspects of the incident.
Kazakhstan’s navy has around 3,000 personnel and is deployed in the Caspian Sea, where it performs maritime duties including protecting energy infrastructure in the region.
