The AL observer mission aroused suspicions from both Syrian government supporters and opposition.

The Arab League (AL) observer mission has aroused suspicions from both Syrian government supporters and the opposition one week after the observers started its one-month investigation mission to several major cities in Syria. In accordance with the agreement between the AL and the Syrian government, AL observers will conduct supervision over Syrian governments implementation of the agreement to end conflicts. However, supporters of the Syrian government believe that the mission is a part of western countries conspiracy to interfere in Syrias internal affairs. These observers are sent by the foreign countries. They are the ones that will do harm to the Arab countries. Iraq is one of the examples. The Arab countries know this, said Firas, local resident in Damascus. The observers from different countries are all different. But they all carry out their work according to the plan made by foreign countries, said Hani, local resident in Damascus.Sudanese General Mohammed Ahmed Mostafa al-Dabi, head of the AL observer mission to Syria said that the Syrian government had set no obstacle for the work by the AL mission. This statement triggered wide-spread criticism from the opposition as soon as it reached the public. The opposition expressed their suspicions over the qualification of the observers since some of the AL member countries have a poor record in safeguarding human rights.According to reports by Syrian media, protests would erupt wherever the AL mission goes. As to the fairness of the AL mission, some Syrian citizens said that it was still too early to make a judgment. Some believe that the AL mission will do little in solving the problem. The only way out is to hold discussions between the government and the opposition. We cannot comment on them since their report hasnt come out yet, said Elia, a local resident in Damascus.
