21 perished as northern China facing landslide
(Web Desk) – According to authorities on Sunday, the death toll from landslides in the province of Shaanxi has risen to 21, with six more still missing, as China has been subjected to terrible weather conditions that have caused widespread human destruction and torrential downpours.
According to Chinese broadcaster CNR, a landslip struck the village of Weiziping, south of Xi'an, on Friday, destroying two homes as well as roads, bridges, the electricity grid, and other infrastructure.
"Twenty-one people were found dead so far, and six others are still missing," the Xi'an emergency management bureau said in an online statement.
Chinese media earlier put the death toll at four Sunday.
"Four people have died and some people remain unreachable," CNR said on the social media network Weibo.
It had earlier stated that there were two dead and 16 people missing.
A hundred military and firefighters were also deployed, according to CNR, for the ongoing Sunday relief efforts.
China has seen fatal floods and unprecedented rainfall in recent weeks; the most recent toll released on Friday indicated that at least 78 people have died as a result of storms in the northern section of the country.
In a community located in a mountainous area, a video from the Xinhua news agency showed damaged or destroyed homes and infrastructure among broken trees and piles of rubble along muddy roadways.
"Rescue work was underway, with 81 people and 11 vehicles deployed at the site," the Chinese channel reported.
