South Korea: Heavy rain, landslide leave 10 dead

At least 10 people were killed due to heavy rains and landsliding in South Korea on Wednesday.

At Chuncheon, about 100 km east of Seoul, 10 people were killed in landsliding as four building were damaged.The rescue workers were still sifting through the muddy rubble of the wrecked hotels, restaurants and coffee shops searching for missing people.Chuncheon residents said they were taken by surprise by the landslide, which occurred just after midnight near the Soyang River Dam.According to news reports, the ten killed in the small hotel were all college students who were doing volunteer work in the area.Over the past 24 hours, 400 mm (16 inches) of rain has been dumped on the capital Seoul, causing flash floods, landslides and bridge closures.Emergency workers said at least four people were killed in other accidents related to the severe weather. The weather bureau said more heavy rain was forecast for the next 48 hours.
