UN launches air strike on President Gbagbos forces in Ivory Coast

UN launched air strikes on President Gbagbos military in Ivorys Coasts largest city, Abidjan.

The airstrikes – the first explicit foreign intervention in the conflict – came as fighting intensified around the presidential palace.Ivorian President Gbagbo defied international pressure to give up the presidency after UN-certified election results showed his opponent Alassane Ouattara won the November 2010 polls.Thousands of people have been killed so far in riots between the Gbagbo and Ouattara’s forces. After Gbagbo refused to transfer the power, the UN allowed the attack on Ivory Cost to protect the civilians. Fighters loyal to Alassane Ouattara have surrounded the presidential palace in Ivory Coast with the help of UN forces. A US paper claimed that Gbagbo was ready to come on table and soon he would be given a safe passage.
