The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is being observed today.

The day is observed to commemorate the brutality of police which opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid pass laws in 1960. Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.Every year on March 21, different ceremonies are held and rallies are taken out to create awareness among the youth about racial discrimination. A video with messages of international players, including Messi, has been launched in this regard.
