WEB DESK (Dunya News) – The battle for Mosul saw an extraordinary shift as ISIS lost militants in hundreds since Iraqi forces and allied fighters backed by US-led air strikes launched an offensive to retake Mosul last week.

It has also been reported that innumerable ISIS fighters are also fleeing Syria as the opponent forces are setting up to capture the centre of Mosul.

The battle to regain the second largest city of Iraq is considered to be the biggest ground battle ever since the allied troops led by the US stormed into Iraq in 2003.

The ISIS militants known for their masterly warfare skills had to face 50,000 Iraqi troops alongside Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, Sunni Arab tribesmen and also Shia militiamen. Moreover, the US-led jets are also taking part in the operation.

Sources have confirmed that the allied forces have the decisive advantage of airstrikes and that is compelling ISIS militants to flee the battlefield.

However, the operation to retake Mosul could take weeks as somewhere around 5000 ISIS fighters are still offering resistance in Iraq’s second largest city.

War strategists have confirmed that the intrusion into Mosul centre would not be that easy for allied forces. Furthermore, the battle could more likely shape into a fierce face-off as 1.5 million locals still remain in the city. It is also expected that ISIS militants could use locals as human shields in the decisive battle.
