Congo plane crash kills 19

A plane has crashed in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 19 people. One person was also critically injured as it came into land in Bandundu, about 200km (125 miles) west of the capital. The plane operated by local airliner FILAIR was going from central Congo to Bandundu when it crashed. Colonel Joli Limengo, the local chief of police, told that most of those on board had died in the accident, including the two pilots - who were believed to be Belgian nationals. He said that 19 bodies were pulled from the wreckage along with two survivors, one of whom later died. Congo has one of the worst air safety records in the world. The Central African country's safety regulations are notoriously lax. Few passable roads traverse Congo after decades of war and corrupt rule, forcing the country's deeply impoverished people to rely on ill-maintained planes and boats to move around.
