Ingushetia and other provinces in Russia's North Caucasus have been rocked by an insurgency.

MOSCOW (AP) Officials say a top security official of the restive region of Ingushetia was shot and killed.

Russia s Investigative Committee said in a statement Tuesday that Akhmed Kotiyev, the secretary of Ingushetia s Security Council, was attacked in his car. His driver died on the spot, and Kotiyev died in hospital.

Russia s ITAR-TASS news agency quoted Ingushetia s governor, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, saying that Kotiyev was killed because of his work with former rebel fighters.

Ingushetia and other provinces in Russia s North Caucasus have been rocked by an insurgency, which has spread across the region after two separatist wars in Chechnya.
