Madrid Zoo: Boo meets media

Boo, an orphan baby orangutan, made his debut press appearance at the Madrid Zoo in Spain.

Boo, named after the childrens shows Boo and I produced by KidCo TV, was born on July 5, 2010 but lost his mother, Pundu, when he was only seven months old after she acquired a lung disease. Boos birth marks the first of his species at the zoo in 20 years. Now almost ten months old, Boo is responding well to efforts by conservationists and zoo keepers who are trying to get one of the female orangutans to adopt him. Orangutans drink maternal milk for two to three years but Boo is adjusting well to being bottle fed by zoo keepers. We took advantage of the fact that the animal lived with his mother for seven months, he had learned thing from her, and had lived with the group and from there we began the new process, Conservation Maria Delclaux said, explaining the process of reintroducing the young orangutan to an adoptive mother. What we did was have him in visual contact of the others (orangutans) in the first month, at no time did we move him to another installation in the zoo, he has always been in visual contact with the other members of the group and we have trained him to drink from a bottle through the fence.
