Orissa: Endangered sea turtles being killed

Dunya News

In the Indian state of Orissa, endangered sea turtles are being killed off by vessels ignoring a fishing ban in a large turtle sanctuary.

According to Indian government officials, no more than 800 turtles have been killed since November but animal activists claim almost 5,000 of the tiny olive ridley turtles have died. Environmental and wildlife protection is a major concern in Indias coastal states but so is creating a sustainable livelihood for poor inhabitants of the region, officials say. As this species of turtles is getting extinct, its name was entered in the list of World Conservation Union in 1986.
