Japan space agency rocket engine explodes

(Web Desk) - A Japanese space agency experienced a setback when an engine being developed for the Epsilon S small rocket exploded during testing in Akita Prefecture.

The explosion caused significant damage but thankfully, no one was injured.

The incident occurred during the ground test of the second-stage engine, with the engine suddenly emitting flames and bursting with a loud noise. The explosion resulted in a large plume of smoke and caused damage to the building.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze after two hours.

The Epsilon S rocket is part of Japan's efforts to compete in the satellite launch market and improve upon the previous Epsilon series. The launch of the Epsilon S has been postponed from the original plan and is now scheduled for fiscal year 2024. The Epsilon series uses solid fuel, which simplifies the launch preparations compared to rockets using liquid propellants.
