Seminar on lungs disease held in Rawalpindi

A seminar on managing patients with Asthma and COPD was organised in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

Professor of Pulmonogy University of the Withwatersand Johansberg South Africa Charles Feldman addressed the participants about the disease.He feared that by the 2020 COPD is predicted to become the third leading cause of death worldwide exceeded only by heart disease and stroke.COPD is a fatal lung disease which kills more people each year than lung cancer and breast cancer combined.The symptoms of COPD include breathlessness, increased effort needed to breathe, excessive mucus, chronic cough and fatigue.Sometimes the disease can get suddenly worse which is known as an exacerbation.Up to 75% of patients with COPD find everyday activities difficult including walking upstairs andd into move sehold chores washing and dressing.The symptoms experienced by people with COPD also have a psychological impact with patients frequently experiencing feeling of anxiety helpless and depression.About the treatment of COPD, the professor said as there is no cure for COPD, all the currently available treatment concentrate on showing progression of the disease controlling symptoms reducing complications and improving patient quality of life.Stopping smoking is the single most effective intervention to reduce the risk of developing COPD and to stop its progression.Influenza vaccination is also recommended as is a rehabilitation programme for all patients and oxygen therapy in patients with severe disease.A Large number of twin cities doctor participated in the seminar and asked question about the deadly disease.
