West Indies won the first test match by beating Pakistan by 40 runs on day four.
Pakistan was outplayed by the host West Indies in a low scoring test innings. Pakistan was given a target of 219 runs to win the test match which they failed to chase. The green shirts were not able to score more than 200 runs in both their innings. On the start of day four, Pakistan was 80/3 but after a battling lineup collapse, the last seven batsmen could only score 98 run. All hope was lost when the partnership of Asad Shafiq and Misbah ulhaq was broken. Umar Akmal took a stand but with no batsman to support the innings Pakistan stuttered to 178 before being bowled out. Darren Sammy took five wickets while Ravi Rampaul took four. Umar Akmal was the highest scoring batsman in the first test with 80 runs in two innings while Lendl Simmons for the West Indies was the highest scorer with 70 runs. Saeed Ajmal had the best bowling figure in both the innings of the first test with 11 wickets while Darren Sammy and Ravi Rampaul were equal on seven wickets each for the West Indies. On the other hand, West Indian captain Darren Sammy won the match on the match award. The West Indies now lead the two test series 1-0.Pakistan’s hope of winning a test series in the Caribbean was lost when they lost the first of the two test match series. The second and the last test would be played at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts on May 20.
