Three mountaineers Cory Richards of USA, Denis Urubko of Kazakhstan, and Simone Moro of Italy summited Gasherbrum II in Pakistan, the thirteenth-highest mountain in the world and fifth-highest mountain in Pakistan.

After summiting Gasherbrum II on 2nd February 2011 at 11:30 am (local time), the three mountaineers safely returned to the base camp of the mountain. This is the first of the five 8,000-meter peaks in Pakistan to have a successful winter ascent, despite many attempts, especially in recent years. The Gasherbrum II ascent also marks the first time an American climber, Richards, has done the first winter ascent of an 8,000er. Richards climbed his first 8,000-meter peak just last spring, summiting Lhotse. While the Italian climber Simone Moro now joins the greatest winter Himalayan climbers in history. It really was an extremely difficult descent, right through the storm, which the three mountaineers had to battle through to descend to reach Camp 1 at 5900m.
