Kenyan court adjourns Wanjiru death inquest

NAIROBI (AFP) - The inquest into the death of Kenya s former Olympic marathon gold medallist Samuel Wanjiru has been adjourned for three months to allow lawyers time to review the documents.
A public inquest was due to start in Nairobi on Monday after being moved from his central Kenya hometown of Nyahururu, where he died in mysterious circumstances nearly three years ago.
Wanjiru s hard and fast marathoning style revolutionised the sport and set the stage for string of world record-breaking runs by other Kenyan runners.
His victory at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he ran an Olympic record of 2:06.32 in extreme heat and secured the country s first Olympic gold for the distance, is widely considered to be the greatest marathon performance of all time.
Wanjiru, 24, was found dead in May 2011 after he fell from the first-floor balcony of his house.
At the time it was reported that the runner was having an extra-marital affair and leapt from the balcony to escape his furious wife. Police also suggested he may have committed suicide.
The inquest was delayed after his family failed to agree on the venue.
Wanjiru s mother, Hannah, claims her son had been murdered. She wanted the inquest to be held in the capital Nairobi. But his widow, Tereza, asked to have it heard in Nyahururu.
Nairobi chief magistrate, Hannah Ndungu, has ruled that the inquest will now start in the capital on May 14.
