Matthews wins 2nd stage, takes Tour of Utah lead

Matthews had a one-second lead over Van Avermaet in the overall standings.
TORREY (AP) - Australia's Michael Matthews won the second stage of the Tour of Utah on Wednesday to take the overall lead in the six-stage race.
Matthews, riding for Orica GreenEdge, outsprinted Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet by a bike-length a day after finishing second behind the BMC rider in the first stage.
"It's definitely been a long process this year," Matthews said. "I haven't had a win yet. I've had lots of seconds. It was really a goal for me to come into this tour with good form and, hopefully, keep building up through it."
Matthews had a one-second lead over Van Avermaet in the overall standings. American Christopher Jones of UnitedHealthcare was third overall, 11 seconds back.
The lead group finished the 131-mile (211-kilometer) stage that started in Panguitch in 5 hours, 17 minutes, 56 seconds.
On Thursday, the 119-mile (192-kilometer) third stage will go from Richfield to Payson.
