Djokovic, Federer reach quarter-finals of Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer stormed into Wimbledon quarter-finals.
Top seed Novak Djokovic showcased his full armoury of shots as he sauntered into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a 6-3 6-1 6-3 demolition of his compatriot and friend Viktor Troicki on Monday (July 2).Djokovic came into the encounter on the back of an 11-match winning streak against his opponent and never looked like relinquishing the psychological edge as he broke decisively in the sixth game of the first set before closing it out.The world number one was in no mood for hanging about in the second, breaking for the third time with a forehand volley to secure the set in just 24 minutes.Troicki sliced a backhand into the net to hand Djokovic a break in the third and he finished him off to set up a quarter-final against either Richard Gasquet or Florian Mayer.Switzerlands Roger Federer was able to navigate a greasy Centre Court and painful back injury to reach the quarter-finals as he beat Xavier Malisse. His 7-6 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory hardly tells the tale of a match in which Malisse had chances to rock the six-times champion, but mostly failed to capitalise. The 30-year-old felt his back twinge early in the opening set on a chilly afternoon in south-west London. His movement washampered and he resorted to rolling in serves at about 75 percent speed. He left the court after the seventh game for treatment and returned eight minutes later before dropping his serve to trail 5-6. Malisse failed to take his chance, though, and allowed Federer back into it. He raced through the tiebreak and the second set too.Belgiums Masillse got a head of steam up in the third set to win it, but again fizzled in the fourth as Federer sealed the win.The Swiss sought to play down his injury as he looks to meet another thirty-something next in Mikhail Youzhny.Only Jimmy Connors with 41 can better Federers 37 grand slam quarter-finals in the professional era, but nobody has won more grand slam matches since tennis turned professional.Federers victory over Malisse extended his grand slam win-loss record to 241-36.
