Sergey Kirdyapkin wins 50km walk at World Championship

Sergey Kirdyapkin of Russia won the 50-kilometer walk at the world championships, building a late-race surge into a commanding victory. The 2005 world champion moved up from fourth at the 35-kilometer mark to the lead with 10 kilometers to go, winning in 3 hours, 38 minutes, 35 seconds a world-leading time. The Russian crushed the competition, beating Trond Nymark of Norway by 2:41. Jesus Angel Garcia of Spain was third at the Brandenburg Gate, 3:02 behind Kirdyapkin. Spanish athlete Jesus Angel stood third. In men 100meters race Lashawn Merritt covered the distance in .06 seconds and stood first. American Jeremy Wariner remained second while Rennie Quow of Trinidad stood third. In the 200meter women race Alyson covered the distance in 22.02 seconds and stood first. This is the third title of her after 2005 and 2007.
