Contests in different categories continue in Twelfth World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany. Kenyan athlete Linet Masai won women's 1000 meters; where as Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay both cruised into the semifinals of the mens 100 meters. Bolt, the three-time Olympic champion from Jamaica, and Gay, the three-time world champion from the United States, proved they are in form for the most anticipated race of the year. Gay won his quarterfinal in 9.98 seconds, and Bolt advanced in at 10.03, finishing second in his heat. Christian Cantwell of the United States won the shot put title at the world championships and he had to produce a world leading mark for this season of 22.03 meters in the penultimate round to see off Majewski. Valeriy Borchin of Russia won the first gold medal of the Championships, the men's 20-kilometer race walk, in a time of one hour, 18 minutes and 41 seconds.
