ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has contacted Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman by telephone and requested that the party postpone its march for a few days, offering talks on the petroleum levy.
According to the details, the prime minister said he was ready for a meaningful discussion with the JI on the petroleum levy and assured Hafiz Naeem that he would meet him upon his return from New York and announce a relief package for the people.
Hafiz Naeem, however, said the JI would continue its struggle against the levy and would not call off its protest until the petroleum levy was abolished.
“We will continue the struggle and will not give up the protest until the levy is abolished,” Hafiz Naeem said.

He added that the JI had been protesting against the levy for the past one and a half months.
The JI emir said he would consult the party leadership on whether a break of a few days should be taken during the long march.
Meanwhile, the JI’s train march against the petroleum levy reached Multan, where Hafiz Naeem addressed a rally.
He said the people should be freed from what he termed an “extortion tax” on petrol, maintaining that the petroleum levy was unacceptable under any circumstances.
The JI has been campaigning for the abolition of the petroleum levy and has continued its protest movement across the country.
