GUJRANWALA (Dunya News) - Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has approved the Gujranwala Mass Transit Project, a long-awaited development aimed at easing daily travel for the city’s growing population.

A special meeting was held in Gujranwala under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif also attended the session.

Speaking on the occasion, Nawaz Sharif said that the mass transit project is the rightful need of Gujranwala’s people and should have been launched long ago. He added that he was glad to see progress for the city and said the project would “make life easier for the common man.”

Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar gave a detailed briefing on the project. He highlighted that the Gujranwala Mass Transit System is a historic initiative designed to improve public mobility. According to the briefing, the project will span more than 30 kilometres from Eminabad to Ghakkhar and is expected to benefit over 51,000 passengers every single day.

Bilal Akbar further stated that the project will include 40 electric articulated buses, ensuring a modern, eco-friendly, and efficient transport system for the people of Gujranwala.
The approval marks a significant milestone, as the government aims to bring Gujranwala on par with other major cities through improved infrastructure and upgraded public transport. As officials put it, this project is meant to “turn over a new leaf” for the city’s development.
