PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved the establishment of the Special Branch as a formal specialised unit/separate cadre.

An important meeting regarding the police Special Branch was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muhammad Sohail Afridi.

During the briefing, it was stated that Special Branch personnel are responsible for intelligence, security, verification, survey, and surveillance duties. Additionally, 308 personnel from the merged tribal districts have been integrated into the Special Branch.

The briefing further highlighted that in 2025, the Special Branch neutralized 2 suicide jackets, 32 IEDs, 70 rocket shells, and 288 hand grenades.

Last year, it provided security for 635 political gatherings, verified weapons and explosive licenses, conducted 3,124 NADRA verifications, 6,840 passport checks, 14,518 CPEC verifications, 6,060 personal, and 9,413 government personnel verifications.

During the meeting, the chief minister approved the establishment of the Special Branch as a formal specialized unit/separate cadre and also gave principle approval for the creation of 1,221 posts within the branch.

Sohail Afridi stated that all required human resources and other facilities will be provided to the Special Branch on a priority basis.

The chief minister also approved Rs 1,820 million for infrastructure and Rs 904.7 million for motor vehicles. A total of 98 vehicles and 404 motorcycles required by the Special Branch will be provided on a priority basis, while Rs 2,543.9 million will be allocated for the purchase of technical equipment and technology.

He said the Special Branch would be modernized according to intelligence and counter-terrorism requirements, emphasizing that the police are a key pillar in the fight against terrorism. All necessary resources will be provided to enhance the Special Branch’s capacity.

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also directed that proposed allowances for the Special Branch be prioritized for approval and approved the construction of new buildings for the branch across the province.
