Aitzaz Ahsan said that if Benazir Bhutto were alive, she would not have supported this amendment and added that she would not have endorsed lifelong immunity for the President.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): Prominent lawyer and politician Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan on Thursday said that judges resignations could prove dangerous for the government.
Speaking on Dunya News programme “Dunya Meher Bokhari Kay Sath,” Aitzaz Ahsan said that the President [Asif Ali Zardari] should also have had his name removed from the clause, in the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, granting the lifelong immunity to president from criminal proceedings and arrest. “If I had known, I would have definitely advised the President to do so,” he added.
Aitzaz Ahsan said that the judiciary has been undermined by the judiciary itself, and that it [judiciary] needs to practice self-accountability.
He further said that if Benazir Bhutto were alive, she would not have supported this amendment and added that she would not have endorsed lifelong immunity for the President.
Aitzaz Ahsan added that Benazir always supported the office of the Chief Justice. He was of the view that the two judges [Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah] should not have resigned immediately -- they should have waited.
