ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Former Attorney General and member of the Law and Justice Commission, Makhdoom Ali Khan, has tendered his resignation from the commission.

According to sources, Makhdoom Ali Khan sent his resignation to the Law and Justice Commission Chairman. In his resignation letter, he stated that while he had accepted the invitation to serve as a member of the commission with the hope of contributing to legal reforms through consultation, strategy, and reasoning, the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment had, in his view, completely undermined judicial independence.

Makhdoom Ali Khan wrote that he had witnessed despair among young lawyers after the 26th Amendment and believed reforms were still possible through the commission. However, he said that “without an independent judiciary, legal reform is impossible,” adding that remaining a part of the commission under the present circumstances would be “tantamount to deceiving oneself.”

He acknowledged his inability to continue in the role and formally resigned from the position.

Two senior Supreme Court judges – Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah – have also resigned, terming the 27th Constitutional Amendment “an assault on the Constitution.”
