ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The National Assembly has approved the 2025 Army Act following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, introducing significant changes to Pakistan’s military leadership structure.

Under the new law, the Army Chief will also serve as the Chief of Defence Forces, with a term of five years.

The legislation states that a fresh notification will formalise the Army Chief’s appointment as Chief of Defence Forces, and the five-year term will commence from the date of appointment. This effectively resets the tenure under the new role.

As Chief of Defence Forces, the Army Chief will oversee the restructuring and integration of all branches of the Pakistan Armed Forces. The aim is to streamline command and improve coordination across the military.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar confirmed that the law clearly defines the Chief of Defence Forces’ term as five years. He also noted that the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee has been abolished under the new provisions. The Prime Minister retains the authority to appoint the Chief of Defence Forces.
