LAHORE (Dunya News) - A hearing on plea against increased tariff on protected and non-protected electricity consumers will be held in the Lahore High Court (LHC) today.

It is pertinent to note that the petition against tariff on protected and non-protected electricity users has made the federal government, chairman of both National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) and others respondents.
The petition requested the court to direct the Ministry of Energy to annul its recent notification on increased tariff on power users.
The filed petition implied that the government has imposed a protected tariff on users utilising 200 units of electricity while a non-protected tariff imposed on consumers using more than 200 units of electricity.
The petition argued that users were burdened with both protected and non-protected tariff.
It may be recalled that the federal cabinet had on July 4 approved an increase in the basic tariff of electricity up to Rs7.12 per unit, including protected and non-protected consumers who use up to 200 units of power. The hike was implemented on July 1, 2024.
The cabinet approved an increase of Rs3.95 in the tariff for protected consumers up to 100 units while Rs4.10 per unit were raised for protected customers who consume 101 to 200 units.
However, an amount of Rs50 billion has been allocated to provide a relief of Rs 4-7 per unit as a concession to our protected category consumers using up to 200 units a month for a three months period from July to September.
This will benefit around 25 million domestic power consumers which constitute around 94% of the total consumer base, the relief was provided by PM Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday.
