Punjab eyes defamation law promulgation to counter spread of false, fabricated news

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab government has decided to implement the Defamation Law Bill, 2024, to prevent the spread of false, fabricated and fictitious news through print, electronic and social media in Punjab.

According to details, the provincial government has already tabled the Defamation Law Bill, 2024, in the Punjab Assembly.

The bill has been forwarded to the relevant committee which will come up with its recommendations in a couple of days.

After the recommendations of the committee, the bill will be presented to the provincial assembly for approval.

Once approved, the bill will be implemented in the province with immediate effect.

Insiders say the law will apply to those false and untrue news spread through print, electronic and social media, which tarnishes the identity of a person or an organisation.

They say that the law will be applied to remedy false news that is spread to damage an individual’s privacy and public image.
