Demanding reserved seats sans poll participation is like putting the cart before the horse: Tarar
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – PML-N leader Azam Nazir Tarar on Tuesday expressed surprise at the Sunni Ittehad Council’s demand for allocation of reserved seats from the Election Commission of Pakistan without even participation in the Feb 8 general elections.
Tarar, who served as the federal law minister until August 9 last year before the caretaker set-up commenced, argued that only political parties with representation in parliament could qualify for the allocation of reserved seats for minority and women.
Tarar told media outside the ECP office that from legal perspective, only parties with parliamentary seats were entitled to allocation of reserved seats.
The Sunni Ittehad Council comprises independent candidates who won election with the backing of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
The PTI joined the SIC in haste in an attempt to secure reserved seats, PML-N leader Ataullah Tarar, who joined Azam Tarar, said, remarking that PTI’s own actions led to its downfall.
He said the party could have avoided this situation by holding intra-party elections in accordance with the constitution. “Now the PTI does not exist in parliament.”
