KARACHI (Dunya News) - The 96th birth anniversary of former prime minister and founder of Pakistan People’s Party Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is being observed today (Friday).

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was born on January 5, 1928 in Larkana. Educated at Berkeley and Oxford, Bhutto trained as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn.

He entered politics as one of President Iskander Mirza’s cabinet members, before being assigned several ministries during President Ayub Khan’s military rule.

He founded Pakistan People’s Party in 1967.

Bhutto served as President of Pakistan from 1971 to 1973 and prime minister from 1973 to 1977.

On 5 July 1977, chief of army staff General Zia-ul-Haq deposed Bhutto in a bloodless coup.

Later, he was given death sentence on April 4, 1979 in the most controversial case of our judicial history.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the man who gave first unanimous constitution of Pakistan while he also founded the nuclear programme of the country.

In his message on the birth anniversary of Bhutto, PPP’s chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also paid rich tribute to his grandfather.

“We’ll make Pakistan a prosperous and strong country according to the ideology of Quaid-e-Awam,” said Bilawal in his message on X, formerly Twitter.

Senior PPP leader Sherry Rehman also paid rich tribute to late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in her message on X.

“Today, his grandson Bilawal Bhutto takes the dream forward to empower the bottom of the social pyramid, to rebuild Pakistan as an economically vitalised nation with investments in human capital, sustainable development and policy instruments that reboot our social sectors as inclusive and responsive for resilience in the 21st century,” Rehman said.
