Pakistani police officer Sonia Shamroz wins international award

She has been honoured with 'Office of the year Award' by IAWP in Auckland

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – Sonia Shamroz Khan, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and District Police Officer (DPO) of Battagram, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been honoured with an international award for her role to curb violence against women.

The International Association of Women Police (IAWP), a global organization for women police officers and women in other criminal justice roles, presented the “Officer of the year Award” to Ms Khan at a ceremony in Auckland, New Zealand.

The organisation states on its website that the award is bestowed up a “female police officer who distinguishes herself by her exemplary conduct and achievements in more than one area of policing and over a period of time that has a significant impact on her agency and /or area of responsibility”.

She has served at various key positions, including DPO Chitral. She is known for establishing a special complaint cell to combat forced marriages and other women related issues.

Talking to media, the police officer dedicated her award to women facing gender discrimination and women cops. She said women police officers were working hard for ensuring national security.

She recalled that women in Battagram were previously reluctant to report crimes in police station but the situation is changed now as they used to approached the police for their help.
