Punjab govt issues red alert amid flood threat
LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab government on Sunday decided to issue a red alert in the province due to heavy rains and flood situation.
Holding a press conference after the cabinet meeting, caretaker provincial information minister Amir Mir said the cabinet reviewed the flood situation, adding River Ravi was 90 percent full and Bhim dam on Sutlej river was 70 percent full hence there was a risk of flooding in both the rivers.
He further said that a rail of 22,000 cusecs was passing through Shahdara in the Ravi river, adding Delhi was completely submerged and if there were more rains in India, Shahdara may also be submerged like in 1988.
He stressed flooding may be caused in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers, adding people have established illegal settlements on the banks of the river as 99 percent of the settlements are built inside the river.
The minister stressed if the flood was likely to increase the government will evacuate the population immediately, mentioning people should cooperate with the government.
