SC fixes Imran Khan's petition against NAB amendments for hearing
ISLAMABAD (Dunay News) – The Supreme Court on Friday fixed a case related to amendments made to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws for hearing on Jan 10 (Tuesday).
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah would resume hearing of the petition filed by former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan against the amendments. The PTI chief argued that amendments will “virtually eliminate any white-collar crime committed by a public officer holder.”
The registrar office has issued notices to the parties in the case. Imran Khan’s lawyer Khawaja Harris had completed his arguments in the case. In the upcoming hearing, federal government’s lawyer Makhdoom Ali Khan would begin his arguments in the case.
After coming into power in April last, the PDM government approved the National Accountability (Second Amendment) Act 2022 — a move that was termed by the PTI an attempt to curtail the powers of anti-graft watchdog.
In July last, the federal cabinet also passed, the National Accountability (Third Amendment) Bill, 2022, which restricts the organisation role in corruption cases of involving over Rs500 million and revoking the president’s authority to appoint judges of the accountability court.
During December hearings, CJP Umar Ata Bandial had commented that the amendments to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) ordinance will slide Pakistan 100 points down in the world corruption index. Justice Ijazul Ahsan had remarked that the amendments were carried out only to benefit the very lawmakers who legislated on it.
