Supreme Court announces verdict for victims of Tarbela dam after 60 years

The Court has rejected WAPDA’s plea against the claims by victims of the dam.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): The Supreme Court of Pakistan has pronounced judgment for the victims of Tarbela dam after 60 years.
The Court has rejected WAPDA’s plea against the claims by victims of the dam and retained the High Court’s verdict regarding compensation and providing alternate lands to the victims.
During the hearing, Justice Umar Ata Bandial also had a conversation with WAPDA’s lawyer. The court asked WAPDA’s lawyers how much land would be required for 206 victims to which the lawyer told the court that 5000 acres of land is needed to compensate victims.
The court further remarked that WAPDA should think of a way to compensate the victims of Tarbela dam, adding that the amount of 107,000 for 12 acres of land equals to no compensation.
WAPDA’s lawyer stated that the cases of the victims could be reviewed in the light of the decision by High Court. It should be noted that a three-member bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial delivered the verdict.
