Accountant turns approver in Gujrat police corruption case

LAHORE (Dunya News) – In a major development in the Rs 2.96 billion Gujrat police funds corruption case, Accountant Rizwan Ashraf has become an approver against police officers involved in corruption.

Giving his statement to Judicial Magistrate Kamran Karamat, Rizwan Ashraf said that he did corruption at the behest of former DPOs Rai Ijaz, Rai Zameer, Kamran Mumtaz and Sohail Zafar. The corruption involved irregularities in petrol, salary, utility bills and investigation head.

Rizwan Ashraf said in his statement that on orders of the former four DPOs, he got the fake bills passed with the involvement of district office officials.

He said that he used to arrange functions for senior officers, provide entertainment, serve food to them at Kanara Restaurant in Gujrat and take the wives of DPOs shopping as well. Differences arose over the distribution of corruption money, he added.

The statement further said that he paid Rs 4.5 million to Sohail Zafar Chattha for sparing his life. His share in the corruption money was Rs 10 million out of which Rs 5.5 million was used to buy a house, that house was in the name of his niece and has now been surrendered to NAB.

The highest share of corruption money was given to Rai Zameer and his sons Rai Ijaz, Sohail Zafar and Kamran Mumtaz, read the statement recorded by NAB Prosecutor Haris Shafiq Qureshi.
