PM Imran suggests chemical castration for convicted sex criminals
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the Lahore motorway incident has shaken the entire nation and hit us all on a personal level. He said that he personally holds that pedophiles and rapists should be publicly hanged or chemically castrated.
Talking about the incident, he said when I was studying crimes in Pakistan, I was shocked to learn that we have most crimes that are sex crimes. He was told by police officials that it has gone beyond just a few incidents and child abuse is becoming rampant in the country.
He said that he personally thinks pedophiles and rapists must be hanged publicly but he is told that it will have international repercussions. EU’s GSP status for trade with Pakistan will be affected by public hangings, hence, chemical castration must be conducted on such criminals.
For 1st degree offenders, we must chemically castrate them so that they are not able to do anything at all, he suggested. In addition to policing, we need society to play its part. We are lucky that we have a family system that Europe doesn’t. he added.
Talking about Covid-19, PM said the whole political class was recommending making the same mistakes as India and the entire opposition pushed him for a lockdown like that in Wuhan or Europe.
He said my view was that our demographics were much different than those countries as we have people living in slums. Lahore has 40% of population living in slums, Karachi has slums, even Islamabad has slums, he added.
He said he resisted all that pressure as a poverty stricken country where seven people live in one room cannot be put on lock-down.
Imran Khan said it is Allah’s mercy that Pakistan came out of the COVID crisis while taking care of its poor. But he warned that everyone should be careful and mindful as the pandemic isn’t over and there might be a resurgence of cases in the winter.
Talking about his political career, he said, “I struggled all my life. You can’t become a great cricketer based on referrals”. He said he made a hospital which was even more tedious than cricket; struggle is a part of life.
Expressing his confidence in Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, he said his only issue is that he is not media-savvy and does not self-project by spending taxpayer’s money. He said the first thing I know about Buzdar is that he is not corrupt, but unfortunately, others within the party have clashing political aspirations. He said Police and bureaucracy in Punjab are highly politicized so CM Punjab is running a very tough government in the province.
Hamza Shehbaz even got ‘Thanaydaars’ appointed as per his liking so at first, we had to find good combinations in the bureaucracy who would work as per our vision, the PM said.
Responding to the appointment of CCPO Umar Shaikh and the criticism leveled against him, PM said that he was brought in because land grabbing groups have occupied people’s lands and the police itself is in cahoots with such mafias.
Regarding former IG Punjab, he said that Shoaib Dastgir did a good job as IGP but he is not answerable to the public, me and Usman Buzdar are. He said the current IG will maintain his office if he continues to do a good job.
He said that such changes are being made and they will continue to be made in the interest of the public. People are more concerned about their safety, not the number of officers who have to be changed.
While talking about local bodies, he admitted that they are very important and that powers will be delegated at grassroot level in Punjab just like in KP. He said Karachi and Lahore’s issues will be resolved through the local bodies systems like that in London and New York. The only way forward is an empowered mayor and his own cabinet with the city generating its own resources.
On the Karachi issue, he said Karachi is Pakistan’s financial capital. If Karachi catches a cold, it’s like whole Pakistan becomes ill. He said Karachi’s reservations on census are valid but is another census the demand of the city right now?
Imran Khan said people want prompt solutions for their problems which is possible only under an empowered governance system where city generates its own revenue. We have now implemented the NCOC model to revive Karachi after rains caused Karachi to collapse, he said.
