Flour prices surge in Lahore as Govt-Mills deadlock continues

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The flour price dispute between flour mills and the government has still not been resolved with a 20 kg bag of flour now selling for Rs 1,035 in Lahore.

One of the most important daily-use commodities, flour, is seeing a rise in prices despite a new wheat season. A 20 kg bag of flour, which was available at Rs 825 a month ago, is now being sold for Rs 1,035 while a 10 kg bag sells for Rs 525.

In one month, price of a 20 kg bag of flour has risen by Rs 210. Flour mill owners say that they cannot sell flour at the old price as wheat’s price has reached Rs 1,900 per maund in the open market.

It may be recalled that the government had claimed that it would not allow flour to become more expensive but it has failed in ensuring this as shopkeepers say they are selling flour at the price flour mills are setting.

The public has demanded that the government should take notice of the issue and make flour available to them at a reasonable price. So far, only claims have been made at the government level, concrete steps are still nowhere to be seen.
