Karachis ranking has improved by just one spot in comparison to 2018.

KARACHI (Web Desk) – Day after Shaniera Akram, the wife of renowned cricket legend Wasim Akram, sent out a tweet today with terrifying pictures of Karachi’s Clifton beach, Karachi has been named among the 10 least liveable cities in the world for the fourth consecutive time by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, in the Global Liveability Index 2019 published on Wednesday, reports said.

According to an EIU report, Karachi has been ranked 136th on the annual Global Liveability Index 2019 of the Economist Group – the fifth least liveable city in the world. The list, published on Wednesday, included Tripoli, Dhaka, Lagos and, at the very bottom, Damascus.

Other countries included in the list of the 10 least liveable cities include Caracas in Venezuela, Algiers in Algeria, Douala in Cameroon, Harare in Zimbabwe and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

Karachi’s ranking has improved by just one spot in comparison to 2018 when it was listed on the 137th position.

Meanwhile, Austrian capital Vienna retained its ranking as the world`s most liveable city. Vienna once again came ahead of Australia`s Melbourne, which had held the top ranking for seven years until losing it to Vienna in 2018.

Sydney became the second Australian city to make the most liveable cities list, ranking third above Osaka, Japan, in fourth and Calgary, in Canada, rounding out the top five.

According to the EIU, every city is assigned a rating of relative comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Each factor in a city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable. For qualitative indicators, a rating is awarded based on the judgment of in-house analysts and in-city contributors. For quantitative indicators, a rating is calculated based on the relative performance of a number of external data points.

The scores are then compiled into an index and weighted to provide a score of 1–100, where 1is considered intolerable and 100 is considered ideal.

On Tuesday, cricket legend Wasim Akram’s wife took to Twitter and wrote, “As of this minute, I Shaniera Akram, a citizen of Karachi declare Clifton beach officially hazardous and is in state of an emergency.”
