ECP declares PM's 'alien' statement unconstitutional

Leaders that are appointed on important posts should refrain from giving such statements, said ECP.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday has strongly condemned Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s statement regarding calling caretaker government as alien and declared it as unconstitutional.

The spokesman said that the general elections will be conducted by the commission not any alien, adding that such statements are only based on speculations and assumptions.

Political leaders that are appointed on important posts should refrain from giving such statements as these are equal to making fun of the constitution, he added.

The spokesman further clarified that ECP would not compromise on holding fair and transparent elections in the country.

Earlier, PM Abbasi said that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will take part on the upcoming general elections despite the aliens not the caretaker government would hold elections.

Abbasi said that the ruling party would compromise with the opposition on the caretaker PM’s names, adding that whatever name Leader of Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah would propose, they will support.

The prime minister said that the name of any retired personality could also be considered, however, the name of any retired general wasn’t considered.
