Supreme Court ordered that relatives of missing persons in all prisons should be allowed to meet

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court (SC) ordered the law enforcement authorities on Thursday to provide details of all missing persons kept in prisons within the ultimatum of one week.

The hearing of missing persons case in the apex court was held today in which two-member bench is chaired by Justice Ejaz Afzal. The honourable judge gave remarks that why these people have been kept behind bars for so many years without filing any court proceedings.

The petitioner Amna Masood Janjua told that people are still being forced into disappearance. The missing persons’ matter which started from 137 people has now hiked up to 4,000, she added.

In her arguments, she mentioned the report compiled by missing persons’ commission in which it is stated that 4,229 cases of enforced disappearances were received by the commission from March, 2011, till now. They have claimed to resolve 2,939 of these cases.

Justice Afzal inquired why these people have not been given a proper trial, adding that if someone is found guilty then they should be given punishments. “The apex court has no answers for the relatives of missing persons,” he remarked.

He went on to argue that even the top court is not being given satisfactory answers. The honourable judge said that people have been in search of their loved ones for years and coming to courts but goes all in vain.

According to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 728 people were forcibly disappeared in Pakistan during 2016.

The court adjourned the proceedings and will now hear the case after the provision of detailed report regarding missing persons kept in prisons within the duration of one-week.
