Federal govt announces Rs25bil package for Karachi

A similar package of Rs 32 billion was announced three years ago by then PM Nawaz Sharif

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Federal government announced Rs. 25 billion package for Karachi in which various new projects will be started.

Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair said industrial zones will be upgraded and the government will establish Teaching Hospital in Karachi University. It was announced that the money will be spent to ease the provision of clean water, improvement in fire brigade, and road network.

It should be recalled that a similar package of Rs. 32 billion was given to Karachi by then PM Nawaz Sharif three years ago. However, the 50 percent expenditure for the provision of water from Keenjhar Lake to Karachi, being responsibility of the federal government, was never allotted which is why the construction remains at halt.

Green Line Project, which was due in next year, has been delayed due to technical and legal complications. Five kilometer distance in Lyari Expressway project which remains incomplete was scheduled to be inaugurated on August 14, 2017.

Nawaz Sharif was sacked from premiership, but Karachi Circular Railway project couldn’t be executed. The development is underway at snail’s pace and same is the case with sewerage project S3. Huge announcements of projects for Karachi are often made but their rapid completion is less likely.
