Power situation improves as shortfall reduces to 2333 MW
Electricity demand currently stands at 15,751 MW.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – After suffering a week of prolonged power cuts across the country, masses breathe sigh of relief as the government brought power situation under control today (Sunday) with shortfall reducing to 2,333 megawatts.
The Ministry of Water and Power claimed that situation is completely under control and the authorities are only carrying out six hours loadshedding in the cities and eight hours in rural areas, with no unscheduled loadshedding in any part of the country.
Reportedly, electricity demand currently stands at 15,751 MW while production is around 13,418 MW.
The situation improved two days after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed displeasure over the extended load shedding in the country and made it clear to the federal cabinet and the departments concerned that he wanted an end to load-shedding by December, this year.
The prime minister said it was the government’s responsibility to provide relief to the masses.
Sharif has vowed that power cuts would completely end before the next election, likely to be in May, 2018. His office said generation would hit 26,000 MW, a 3,000 MW surplus.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif swept to power in 2013 vowing to eradicate crippling outages that brought Pakistan’s $250 billion economy to its knees, but he now faces a race against time to stay true to his word before the next general election in 2018.
