Punjab, Sindh may suffer cut in water share
113 million acre-feet water will be available for Kharif season in the rivers.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Technical committee of Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has prepared recommendations regarding availability of rivers’ water in Kharif season which will be presented for approval in advisory committee session on March 31, reported Dunya News on Tuesday.
IRSA’s director operations Khalid Idrees Rana chaired the technical committee session which analyzed the availability of water along with other issues for irrigation in Kharif season, and hinted that Punjab and Sindh may suffer cut in water share due to scarcity.
Representatives of all four provinces, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and other related departments also attended the session.
According to IRSA, 113 million acre-feet water will be available for Kharif season in the rivers, however, Indus River and Chenab River will suffer 40 and 10 percent losses respectively.
35 percent water scarcity might be observed at the start of Kharif season which will reduce with the passage of time.
According to sources, Punjab and Sindh may suffer water deduction due to this shortage, whereas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan will get immunity from any reduction.
