Karachi: KESC employees protest continue on 3rd day
The KESC employees protest against what they said forced retirement is continued for the third consecutive day. On Wednesday, the sacked employees of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) held a protest demonstration in front of its head office located at Gazri. The protesters damaged the cars parked nearby and ransacked the office. The demonstrators demanded immediate withdrawal of the forced decision. On Tuesday, KESC fired more than 4000 employees under voluntary separation scheme (VSS). According to KESC spokesman, administration has decided to shut non-management and non-technical departments in the company. These department included security guards, drivers, clerical staff, bill distributors and sentry workers among others. The company offered its 4500 employees VSS, whose date of validation expired on January 15. 375 employees accepted the offer while rest of the sacked employees will be paid all their statutory dues along with one month's salary.On Friday, President Asif Ali Zardari took a serious notice of the sacking of over 4000 employees of KESC and has constituted a committee to resolve the issue but the sacked employees have refused to end the protest till the restoration.
